SIDS-led Science for SIDS Priorities
The Small Island Developing States Science (SIDSCI) Initiative is a SIDS-led platform bridging island realities and global policy through regionally grounded, politically relevant science.
Our Story
SIDS Scientists, Shaping Global Climate Action
SIDSCI is an independent, cross-regional collaboration created by SIDS scientists, for SIDS policymakers and negotiators. The Initiative supports stronger SIDS participation in global science processes like the IPCC and equips negotiators under the UNFCCC with timely, locally validated evidence
The Challenge
SIDS are on the frontlines of climate change — facing rising seas, saltwater intrusion, loss and damage, and displacement. Yet, SIDS scientists make up less than 5% of authors in global climate assessments like the IPCC
The Gap
Global science often misses island-scale realities. SIDSCI fills that gap by translating community-grounded data into policy-ready evidence — fast enough to inform live negotiations.
Our Value Add
-
Cross-regional SIDS collaboration
-
Community validation of science
-
Rapid analysis aligned to live negotiating questions
-
A science-policy bridge from island systems to global processes
2026 SIDSCI Workshop
In January 2026, SIDSCI will host its inaugural workshop — Increasing Representation and Leadership of Small Island Researchers in Global Climate Science — in Miami, Florida. Bringing together 50 scientists and emerging scholars from across SIDS regions, the event will strengthen networks and advance SIDS-led participation in global climate science and policy
